Gay Marriage is Legal in CT

Today the Supreme Court ruled that civil unions were discriminatory. So gay marriage is now legal in CT. I’m very excited about this because gives a lot of my friends the same right I have.

Read more here.

While I don’t plan to pay it a visit, I’d love to be a fly on the wall at my former Catholic church at this Sunday’s sermon. Can the proverbial sh*t hit the fan in a church?

I’m sure my vet thinks I’m totally nuts now.

Jeff’s mom found a little lump on Murphy’s neck on Sat. I couldn’t see it, but then Sunday at my mom’s I saw it. I was freaking out. (The Internet is so bad for medical advice - both pet and human.)

I have an appt. for Murphy on Thursday, but I wanted to talk to the vet. I missed his call yesterday and so I took a picture of Murphy’s lump.

I called the vet today and talked to my friend Lee, who is the office manager there. Dr. H is off today, but she said he calls in periodically. I gave her Murphy’s website address and asked him to take a look at it. Lee, being a pug owner of two herself, didn’t think it was at all odd that Murphy had his own website. In fact, she said that her Louie may be a bit jealous if he hears that Murphy does have his own URL.

Dr. H, on the other hand, may think otherwise. Then again, he’s been in the business for a while, knows a lot of pet owners and knows me quite well. This may be something he expects from a nut like me. We’ll see.

How to name your children, according to Sarah Palin

"Todd Palin has said Track’s name came from the interest Sarah’s parents had in the sport and the fact that he was born in the sport’s season; Bristol was named after Bristol Bay in Alaska, where Todd grew up and where he does commercial fishing; Willow was named after Willow, Alaska; Piper got her name because it is uncommon and “a cool name”; Trig’s name is Norse for “strength”.

1)Your first-born will be named after your parents favorite sport:
My parents love baseball so my first born would be Strike.

2)Your second-born will be named after a nearby area that you’re not from but you like the sound of part of the name, and maybe you have nostalgic memories of said place. My dad was born in Lac Megantic so Megantic would be my second.

3)Your third-born will be named after another nearby place, for no reason other than you already have two children and don’t have time to put much thought into another name: I think most of our family lives next door in the city of Bristol, we’ll steal that one from the Palins.

4)Your fourth gets a “cool” name:
Meadow - why not? If it’s good enough for Tony Soprano, it’s good enough for my kid.

5)Your fifth gets something mythological, possibly straight out of Lord of the Rings or similar source: Hermione - love Harry Potter

Hope Jeff likes the choices. LOL (Hope he likes the idea of five children, too.)

P.S. Thank you for the surprise honey!

Sick of the political circus

The election is nearly a month away but I’m glad it’ll be over soon. I’m sick and tired of the circus acts as it is. I know, I know, it’s what makes America great because we can be free to bash our opponents, run nasty campaigns and SNL can make fun of the candidates.

But I’ve seen it getting nasty out there. I’m not leaning either way to tell you the truth. I’m on the fence. This is mostly because I’m just tired of all the b.s.

Does this make me un-American? No, I don’t think so. It’s a free country and I have the right to be annoyed with it all. It’s my opinion and as an American and it’s my right.

P.S. Did you know that Ralph Nader is running again? You have to admire a man that just won’t give up.

I took his harness off and this happened . . .

. . .the Georgia Dawgs got upset by Alabama yesterday.

I’ve had Murphy’s Georgia harness on since the season started and for some reason he’s been wearing his other harness for the past few days. It’s all my fault the Dawgs lost. Better put the harness back on.

(Bet you didn’t know I liked college football. Bet you didn’t really care either.)

Blogging slacker

But in me defense, I’ve been busy and life’s been crazy.

This week my excuse is I have been busy doing this and that and the other thing (wouldn’t you like to know what all that is about??!) Stay tuned.

And two weeks before that I spent some wonderful time in the ER because I pulled my back out making the bed. Yup, it’s possible. Jeff was in the shower and I was changing the sheets. I had the brilliant idea of putting the new comforter and bedskirt on. I wanted it to be all done by the time Jeff got out of the shower. I went to lift the mattress up and BOOM! Out goes my back. I screamed as I sank over the bed. I yelled for Jeff but he couldn’t hear.

I managed to get up on the bed where I laid there, crying and carrying on. Finally he got out of the shower and heard my cries. I got rolled over and he put a pillow under my head but there was no moving me. I was in horrible pain. A half and hour later I was on my feet and gingerly trying to walk. It was not easy. Every step was pure hell.

But thankfully, it was just a major muscle and not a disc. And I’m healing. I had to stay out of work for two days. I couldn’t sit for a day but little by little I got my flexibility back. Jeff was a champ. The first night I woke up at 1:30 a.m. to go to the bathroom. He was up with me. “What’s wrong?” he said, getting up. He’s usually a pretty heavy sleeper but even a move from me in bed got him up and making sure I was ok.

So, three weeks later and $500 at the ER and I’m better.

In a month and a half I’m going to DC for work. I’m very excited about this. One, I get to see my friend Michael. Two, I get to spend some time in DC and you know, all the museums are free! I hope to get to the Holcaust Museum. And Three, I’m extending my trip and going to see my friend Ginger in VA. Woo-hoo! I can’t wait. I have had the travel bug for a bit but no extra cash to cure it. This will be just what I need.

Hurray!

Random Moose facts

A coworker and I were talking today (over our company instant message of course), and he told me he was starving he said, “I’m going to eat like a moose tonight.”

And then at the same time we both typed, “Do moose eat a lot?” So I had to look it up. (Hey, it’s slow here and I’m between cases.)

According to this website: http://www.thebigzoo.com/Animals/Moose.asp ...” Moose eat the twigs, roots, bark, and shoots of woody plants. In summer, they feed mostly on water plants such as the water lily and pondweed. During the winter they browse on conifers and eat their needle-like leaves. A moose needs 40+ pounds of food a day.

I posted this on my pug forum for a member who’s in Alaska.

She informed me that: “BECAUSE they eat all that wood, their droppings (moose nuggets as they are called up here) are dry and don’t smell. Jewelry is even made out of moose nuggets for the tourists.

As for the 40+ lbs a day… A full-grown bull moose can weight over 1,500 lbs, I can believe they eat that much!”

And yes, she will be sending me a moose nugget key chain that I will be presenting to my coworker. Yeah, it’s been slow here. Slow enough for me to brush up on my moose trivia.

And slow enough to give my blog readers something to waste their time reading. (Hey, you all asked for an update. You didn’t say it had to be quality. LOL)

Great SNL skit

Thanks for the heads up on this Mike. Tina Fay is brilliant as Sarah Palin. (And no Mike, not the other way around.)

Small victories . . .

Anyone who knows me, knows that I have a horrific sense of direction. I’ve gotten lost several times on the way up to see Mike, Paul and Beth and had to have them navigate me out of my state of confusion. It’s quite the joke now. It’s funny because if you stick me in a place where I’ve never been before, and I have no agenda, I can find my way out. (Like the time I was in Cape Cod and my mom and I got lost coming home from the Christmas Tree Shop. I found our way back in no time, but there was no pressure.)

But if I have somewhere to be, and clear directions, I get lost. I warn all the people whose home visits I’m doing for pug rescue that they WILL get a call when I miss the street and end up on the other side of town. They laugh, “Oh no, these directions are fool-proof!” Yes, but I’ll mess them up, trust me. And inevitably, they get the call, “Where the heck am I?” But I think it breaks the ice. They are nervous about me inspecting their home and being one of the deciders on whether they will get a rescue pug. They realize I’m so easy going and human and it’s all good.

But I digress. . .
I work in a HUGE building. I’ve gotten lost a number of times. I can’t even find half the conference rooms sometimes and end up following coworkers. It’s pretty pathetic, but it’s known. (And this place is like a damn maze.)

Today I lost my ATM card. An hour after I called the bank to cancel it, Kenny, the guard at the front desk called to say he had it. I haven’t been to the front of our building since my first day here. That day is a hazy memory because I was nervous, we were led around and I haven’t had to park in front since that day. (It’s mostly for visitors - we use the service entrance har har har.)

So I had to trek down to see Kenny and get my card. I asked a coworker how to get there. I had a general idea. He told me to turn right, go down this escalator, etc. Of course as soon as he told me how to go, it was lost in the abyss of my brain. But I felt confident that I could do it. So off I went.
I didn’t get turned around once! And I even made it back without second guessing my turns. Sure, it’s nerdy, but I’m pretty proud of me. It’s a small victories for the directionally challenged.

And no, please don’t ask me to do it again. Let’s not tempt fate and lady luck.

One more saved. . .

My mom sent me this poem today and it was also posted on my pug board. I think it’s beautiful:

One More Saved …….

I look around the shelter and desperately try to sort your life, Male, Female, Mix, friendly, sad, healthy ….

I make mental lists and descriptions then search the internet for rescues, hoping that somewhere close there is a town or county that does not have the problem we face and maybe, by chance have room for you.

The days, hours, and minutes go by. With the help of loving people I find that I can help you. One more pet that didn’t matter to the people who had the blessing of you being in their life.

What joy to see this fellow rescuer, a complete stranger that we meet somewhere along the highway, smile and laugh when they first lay eyes on you. Only knowing and trusting what I have told them, which isn’t much.

Underneath the dirt, bugs, mats and small, they see the same thing I’ve seen;

A breathing, living creature, deserving of much better life than what they were dealt.

A stranger with a heart and hope as big as mine. No one understands why we do what we do, but we really don’t care.

We know we do what we do because animals are not judgmental; they are forgiving, loving, and appreciative.

Unlike people, they don’t have to understand the whys; they just love you for being there.

And we always hug each other before parting. Someone who is now your friend, even though you may never see them again.

Because we know the pain that each of us goes through on a regular basis.

Losing one to illness, not being able to save one in time, and I watch as they gently lead you away, and patting your head, telling you all of the great things ahead of you.

And your tail is tentatively wagging with hope while you turn to look back at me unsure of the change but still wanting to trust.

Tears well up when I read the email they sent about how sweet and trusting you are, and they told me of the illnesses and health problems that may be involved. But they say it nonchalantly because it doesn’t matter. All will be taken care of, regardless.

Then they start talking about the tricks you know or something cute you did.

Thanks to this rescuer ……

You will be loved, you will be cared for, and you will know what a good life really means no matter how short or how long it is.

Thank you for the honor of being a part of your new life!!!!

Murphy’s ok

I took Murphy to the vet yesterday and he confirmed that the bumps - uh huh, there are two! - were reactions to his shots. I have to watch them for the next week and if they don’t go down, he’ll aspirate them.

Murphy was a good boy at the vet’s saying hello to the Llasas and the hound and the nervous collie and spaniel. He did want to just sit in my arms once we got in the exam room, but he did let Dr. H examine him. (I think he knows that when he’s a good boy, he gets liver treats.)

Last night he and Duke snuggled with The Mommy while Daddy and I watched a movie. Then he threw up - in the bedroom. He had a fit on the bed, rolling around, rubbing his face on the comforter. Jeff and I comforted him and told him he was a good boy and he did sleep soundly through the night. He ate this morning but was a little mopey.

A friend said her pug did the exact same thing this weekend and it turned out he was bitten by something. I’m going to take a closer look at him tonight. Poor smoosher!

I told him he needed to get better because on Sunday he gets to introduce his new little brother and Daddy to his friends Reggie, Brutus and Buddy and their families. And Uncle Mike promises dehydrated chicken and carrots. He’s excited about all of this weekend’s festivities - expect for the carrots. Like a good big brother, he’s going to let Duke have all of his allotment. LOL

My poor little man….

On Friday I noticed that Murphy had a lump on this back side. I thought it was from his shots last week, but the vet wants to see him. I’m trying to be calm, because I’m sure it’s nothing, but the fact that the vet wants to see him makes me concerned. My poor little man.

He was a little “quiet” last night and his tail was down. But again, I’m probably panicking for nothing. He was probably tired from the heat and running around at “Grandma and Grandpa Holly’s” house. (Jeff’s parents - they adore our boys.)

Keep my smooshie boy in your thoughts.

On another note, the new love our our lives, Duke, is settling in just great. We’re reinforcing the potty training and he’s getting it. We feel so lucky to have the “Duke of Earl” in our lives.

Killer migraine

In addition to yesterday being a hell of a day, today I have the mother of all migraines. I couldn’t see for a while, but the manager insisted we go over the changes from a review. It didnt’ matter that I could only see out of one eye. Nope, the work must go on.

I can see again, but my head is killing me. It’s a bad one. And I have to try and make it until 5, so I can attend a meeting about a new case. I’m sure I won’t get out of here till 6.

Whine, whine whine…
